I wanted to take a break from all the heavy caregiving and gritty Maine farmhouse chatter to share what I loved in June. As you can guess (or, I’ve probably annoyingly mentioned it a dozen times), I don’t get to go out as much as I would want due to my caregiving responsibilities. Saying that, however, I’m super grateful for all my senses which help me to make the best of life regardless, via reading or watching, or (re-watching) my favorite titles. So, here’s what I loved in June via my 5 senses:
What I watched: Charlie’s Angels, the original series. I first watched the classic 1970s series maybe 4 years ago but I have already re-watched the entire series at least 5 times. I love it. The “angels” were truly the Spice Girls of their time. I love the “girl power” message of solving crimes and catching criminals all while wearing heels in sunny, vintage Los Angeles (okay, I know that’s all so “Hollywood” but what’s not to love?).
A scent I loved: While shopping in many small California boutiques, you can usually find the candle brand P.F. Candle Co. The scent called “Teakwood & Tobacco” in particular is a favorite of mine. It brings back memories of when I worked at a lovely boutique in my former hometown on the central coast of California. I love to burn it when I’m feeling particularly homesick on the many rainy days we have here in Maine. With any luck, I’ll return to my hometown soon and be able to resume life as I knew it (more on that later).
What I listened to: When Spotify isn’t making me listen to “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter 5 times a day (no hate whatsoever, I have loved her music and style for a while now but am I just old or did she pop up out of nowhere?), I have been loving the vintage-inspired tunes of Icelandic singer Laufey (yes, I had to look up how to pronounce her name and it’s so beautifully unique). Her music and image is so refreshing and just lovely. I’m sad I missed out on seeing her perform in Boston recently (but, you know how adulting often gets in the way…)
What I ate: I’ve been in a homemade flour tortilla mood (emphasis on the word homemade). Those flour tortillas in the supermarket? They are literal imposters. They have no business calling themselves flour tortillas. Have you seen the ingredients?! Instead, I use my family’s trusted recipe (which I believe was originally found in an issue of Family Fun magazine in the 90s and only has a few ingredients). I love eating flour tortillas with plain old butter or raw cheddar cheese. Yep, I’m guilty of eating the most basic but comforting foods. Also, yes, I can be a real snob with food, but all I’m saying is companies should not be adding a bunch of extra chemicals to our food (also, more on that later).
Something comforting to the touch: I gave my two doggies extra love, cuddles, and pets this month (I mean, I always do) especially because my boy dog Djinn Djinn’s health is declining and I want to spend every minute with him. I never thought the day would come but sadly, I know it is. He’ll be 15 years old on July 1 and you could say I’ve spent a little less than half of my life with him. He’s been by my side through all the good, the normal, and the heartbreaking memories. Both my buddies mean so much to me. Animals are truly so special. I can’t believe they have to suffer the same fate as humans. But I’m one of the humans who believes we will all be reunited again someday. In the meantime, we are connected to our animals and humans for a special reason in this life and hopefully, in the next.
Feel free to let me know anything you loved in June! I’d love to hear!
